The gates remain closed when the red light is on, preventing pedestrians from dashing across the road, reports state media outlet, People's Daily.

But netizens aren't exactly convinced the idea makes sense.

"I don't know what to say, do we need to go to such drastic measures?" said one netizen on social media platform Weibo.

"I think someone will still find a way to get past [the turnstile]," one added.

"Someone might take away the turnstile and sell it for scrap metal," another user joked.
